and yet the past comes hurdling back
at the speed of longing and the cost of desire,
sloshing about in our empty stomachs and empty beer bottles –
mingled with sweat and memory and saliva and other bodily fluids –
transcending temporality and suspending solitude
until nothing remains but a shallow pallor
set to surrender itself first thing on Saturday morning
