Adrián Yñigo Elkano comes from the serene landscapes of Nexo Vallarta, a world that remained virtually untouched by the cybernetic revolution that had taken the world by storm. From a young age, he exhibited a gentle spirit that found its purpose in nurturing the minds of students without cybernetic or genetic enhancements. His classroom became a sanctuary where minds flourished under his patient and nurturing guidance.
However, at the age of 24, his life changed forever at the hands of The Silver Serpents, a group that sought to eliminate those who refused enhancements or helped those who did. Adrián barely escaped with his life. The rest of his family was not so lucky.
At the age of 24, Adrián made the courageous decision to move to New Eden, seeking a fresh start and a sanctuary where he could rebuild his life. As he crafted a new life in New Eden, the echoes of his past trauma lingered, influencing his every step, making him a beacon of hope for those who sought solace within the sanctuary of his classroom.
In a VR café in New Eden, he met his boyfriend, Eli Hunter, a talented VR game developer who stood by him, offering unwavering support and love. Yet the pain still lingered just underneath the surface, threatening to spill forth at any time…
“Mamá,” Adrián called out as he stepped onto the saltillo tile floor in the entryway of his family home. Everything was as it should be – the papaya and hibiscus blooming just outside the door, the smell of rice and tortilla wafting over from the kitchen, Katarina’s doll resting haphazardly on the couch to his right. Everything was as it should be, but a subtle unease tugged at the edges of his consciousness. The door creaked open, and the familiar atmosphere now held an eerie silence.
“Mamá,” he called out once more. “¿Dónde estás? I brought back the juice like you wanted.”
As he stepped into the dimly lit hallway, a cold shiver ran down his spine. It was quiet – too quiet for a Saturday afternoon. The house should be full of life and laughter – of Tía Marcela scolding her husband Tío Marco for being lazy, of his sister Linda chatting with friends while Katarina played with toys, of Mamá singing in the kitchen to old mariachi classics, of Francisco shyly approaching him looking with a new sketch looking for praise. Instead there was silence. Absolute silence.
Adrián’s stomach began to turn. He rounded the corner and heard a sound at his feet, a dry rustle. He knew what it was before he even looked down. Snakeskin. And that’s when he smelled it – that warm, metallic scent.
Dios mío. Blood. The Silver Serpents had really come.
He faltered as the contents of his stomach began to make their way up his throat, wavering between the desire to flee – to get as far away as possible as soon as possible – and the need to see even though he knew what he would find.
“What do we have here? Looks like there was one more of you,” a smooth voice said just behind Adrián’s ear. “Bad luck for you. I guess we need to finish the job.”
