In the heart of Xalúm, where ancient traditions intertwine with the ever-flowing currents of magic, Prince Atl stands in line for the throne of Alom. Though not of royal blood, he was adopted into the family after his strange gifts were discovered. When he casts his own blood upon deep water, Atl at times sees glimpses into the future – glimpses that are, at best, shadows and illusions but can provide keen insight into what is to come.
At the age of 12, Atl chose to relocate to Izel, a nearby kingdom, in order to study under the seer Nacon and begin forming mutually-beneficial political alliances. It was there that he met Prince Iktan, the adventurous and headstrong third son of Izel. Though their personalities could hardly seem more different on the surface, they both share an intensity for life, discovery, and for the good of their people that continually draw them together. Some have even suspected that a more formal and lasting unification between the two kingdoms might be on the horizon…
Beyond the regal facade lies a soul that finds solace in the serene melodies of the flute and the boundless beauty of the night sky.

Atl gazed into the deep waters of Tepeu, the moonlit ripples reflected in his solemn, dark eyes as he sat and gazed into the heart of the river. Somewhere in the distance, Yatzil prowled in the shadows. She was hungry, it had been days after all, but they both knew she would return in a heartbeat should she sense any trouble. Iktan stood beside him, restless.
“You don’t have to do this, chikul,” he said. His normally brash tone had hushed to something barely above a whisper, almost drowned out by the sound of the wind stirring through the long grasses that surrounded them.
Prince Atl caressed his flute, feeling the way the smooth shell rolled across his hand, cold to the touch even on a warm night like tonight. He liked the way it felt; it was the one thing that connected him to the past – the life he had before he had been surrendered by his birth family and become prince of Alom. Sometimes he wondered what his life would have been like if they had never discovered his gift. What was his family like? What music would his mother have played him on that very flute? Why could his gift only allow him to see forward, not back or into the might-have-beens of pasts long dead?
Atl felt Iktan looking at him, awaiting a response, almost demanding it. He smiled to himself and chose respond not with words but with song. He brought the flute to his lips and played a tune, a simple tune, full of regret and longing, of wants for the past and hopes for the future, coloured by the things he had seen and had not seen and had not yet seen.
After a while, Itkan spoke once more. “Chikul, do you truly see the future in those depths?” Iktan asked, his eyes searching Atl’s for the truth.
Atl lowered the flute for a moment, the moonlight casting a gentle glow on his features. “Not a clear path, but shadows and illusions. The future is a dance of possibilities.” He raised the flute and continued playing.
Iktan leaned closer, the scent of night flowers lingering in the air as he spoke even more gently. “What dances have you seen?” His breath warmed Atl’s ear, and his hair brushed his neck.
Atl smiled, turning so their eyes were mere inches apart. “You will know when it is time.”
